New Year's Eve in Wisconsin Dells: Family Parties, Early Countdowns and Tips

A decorated holiday tree in the Kalahari Resort lobby in Wisconsin Dells

New Year's Eve in the Dells is mostly a family holiday. The big resorts throw parties with DJs, buffets and a midnight balloon drop, a few places do an early countdown for kids who won't make it to midnight, and the indoor waterparks are open through the holiday. What you won't find is a big public fireworks show or a downtown ball drop. The tradition here is balloons, and most of the action happens inside the resorts.

A heads up on dates: as of early November, only the Wilderness had posted its 2026 New Year's Eve plans. For the others, below is what they did for New Year's Eve 2025, clearly marked, so you know what to expect and who to call. These events come back most years in a similar form. I'll update this page as the 2026 details are announced.

The resort parties

Many of these are for resort guests only. If you want to go to a specific party, book a room there, and book early.

Mt. Olympus: the easiest one to get into

Last year, Mt. Olympus held a family New Year's Eve party in its indoor theme park from 8 pm to 1 am, with a DJ, rides running late and a midnight countdown with a balloon drop and confetti. Tickets were $25 in advance and $30 at the gate, and free with a resort stay. It's the one big party we know of that was open to anyone, which makes it a good fit if you're staying in a vacation home.

Kalahari: buffet and Glow Party

Last year, Kalahari ran a New Year's Eve Grand Buffet from 5 to 9 pm in its convention center ($58.99 for adults and $18.99 for kids 3 to 10, per a family travel site), followed by a family Glow Party with a DJ and a midnight balloon drop. The Glow Party was free for resort guests and buffet ticket holders. This year will be the first New Year's with Kalahari's new Aquadome open. Reservations: (877) 525-2427.

Wilderness: Aloha 2027 (2026 details posted)

The Wilderness is the one resort that has posted its 2026 plans. Its Aloha 2027 party runs from 9:30 pm to 1 am on December 31 in two ballrooms at the Glacier Canyon Lodge conference center, with DJs, party favors, a photo spot, gift card drawings, a $1,000 grand prize just before midnight and a midnight balloon drop. It's for Wilderness guests only, with photo IDs checked at the door.

  • Tickets: $25 for adults 21 and up (one drink ticket included) and $15 for ages 3 to 20 if you add them to your reservation at least 24 hours before arrival, or $28 and $18 at the door.
  • Countdown Buffet: 4 to 8 pm at Camp Social, $34.99 for adults and $15.99 for kids 3 to 12, also for Wilderness guests. Reservations required at (800) 867-9453. Book the 4 pm seating for a free fountain drink.
  • Restaurants: Field's opens at 4 pm and Sarento's at 4:30 pm with special New Year's Eve menus. Reserve ahead.

Chula Vista: family jamboree and a 21+ party

Last year, Chula Vista had a dinner buffet (reservations required), a Family New Year's Jamboree with a kids' dance party and games, and a free adults-only party for 21 and up, with drink wristbands sold separately. Call (877) 722-2980 for this year.

Early countdowns for little kids

If your kids won't make it to midnight, you have a few options:

  • Knuckleheads' Noon Drop. Knuckleheads has held a Noon Year's Eve party in recent years, with music, treats and a big balloon drop at noon. Check its website for this year's time.
  • An early buffet. The Wilderness Countdown Buffet (4 to 8 pm this year, for its guests) and Kalahari's buffet (5 to 9 pm last year) both work as an early family celebration.
  • A magic show. The Rick Wilcox Magic Theater has a 4 pm show on Thursday, December 31, 2026. It's a fun way to fill the afternoon before dinner.
  • The Christmas dinner show. Christmas in the Dells at Dells Dinner Adventures runs through January 3, 2027. Check whether there's a show on the 31st.

A low-key night

  • The Tree of Light. The downtown River Walk is lit every night from 4:30 to 11 pm, from November 20, 2026, to January 15, 2027, and it's free. It's a nice walk before dinner. See Christmas in Wisconsin Dells for more holiday lights.
  • Dinner out. Supper clubs and resort restaurants fill up on New Year's Eve, so reserve ahead. Our where to eat guide has the options.
  • A night in. Honestly, with a group, a house with a game room and a hot tub is a pretty good way to count down. More on that below.

New Year's Day

  • The indoor waterparks are open, but expect crowds. Check your resort's holiday hours, and book day passes early.
  • First Day Hikes. Mirror Lake and Devil's Lake state parks have held guided First Day Hikes on January 1 in past years. Check the DNR's events page closer to the date. See our hiking guide.
  • Skiing and tubing. If there's snow, Cascade Mountain is usually open by New Year's. See skiing and snow tubing near Wisconsin Dells.

Tips for New Year's in the Dells

  • Book early. The week between Christmas and New Year's is one of the busiest of the winter, and the best parties are tied to resort stays.
  • Check the roads. Snow and ice are common. 511 Wisconsin shows current road conditions, or dial 511.
  • Plan your ride home. If you're heading out for the night, line up a ride before you go.
  • Pack for cold. Late December highs are usually in the low 30s. See Wisconsin Dells weather by month.
  • Have a backup. Our winter guide covers everything that's open this time of year.

Where to stay for New Year's

If you're coming with family or another family or two, a house gives you room to spread out and your own countdown at midnight. My cabin-style Hot Tub Hideout sleeps 12, with a hot tub on a covered, screened porch, an infrared sauna and a game room. The Arcade Hideout sleeps 6, with Pac-Man and Golden Tee downstairs. Both are about 10 to 15 minutes from downtown, close enough to drive to the Mt. Olympus party and back. They're family homes with quiet hours, so no parties. See all our homes.
