How the Dells is laid out
The Dells is really two towns that run together. Wisconsin Dells, the city, has the old downtown on the Wisconsin River, with Broadway, the River Walk and the boat tour docks. Lake Delton, the village just south, has the lake and much of the Wisconsin Dells Parkway (Hwy 12), the strip of waterparks, mini golf, go-karts and restaurants that runs south toward Kalahari and Great Wolf by I-90/94.
North of downtown it gets quiet fast: River Road and the countryside near the Upper Dells, where our homes are. Further out are the state parks: Mirror Lake and Rocky Arbor a few minutes away, and Devil's Lake near Baraboo, about 30 to 40 minutes south.
The easy way to plan: pick one area per half day. Downtown is walkable, everything else is a short drive, and the Parkway gets slow on summer weekends.

Where is Wisconsin Dells?
In south-central Wisconsin along the Wisconsin River, right off I-90/94. The city sits where four counties meet: Adams, Columbia, Juneau and Sauk. Madison is about an hour south, Milwaukee about two hours east and Chicago about three and a half hours southeast.
Is Lake Delton part of Wisconsin Dells?
It's a separate village just south of the city, but the two run together. Much of what people think of as the Dells, including most of the Parkway, Noah's Ark and Mt. Olympus, is in Lake Delton.
How long does it take to drive from downtown to Kalahari?
About 10 to 15 minutes down the Wisconsin Dells Parkway (Hwy 12) in normal traffic. Summer weekends can be slower on the Parkway.
Can you walk around Wisconsin Dells?
Downtown, yes: Broadway, the River Walk and the boat docks are all within a few blocks. The rest of the Dells is spread out along the Parkway and the highways, so plan on driving between areas.
