Wisconsin Dells with Kids: A Family Guide by Age

The floating inflatable waterpark at Land of Natura in Wisconsin Dells

The Dells is built for kids, which is great until you realize there are more waterparks and attractions than days in your trip. We've been coming here with our son since he was little, and what works changes a lot with age. This guide sorts our favorites by age and adds the practical stuff that makes a family trip go smoother.

The quick picks

  • Best waterpark day, any season: Kalahari's indoor waterpark.
  • Best summer day: Land of Natura's floating waterpark and beach.
  • Best "only in the Dells" experience: the Upper Dells boat tour with Witches Gulch, or Lost Canyon's horse-drawn wagon ride.
  • Best rainy day: Tom Foolery's Adventure Park, then a movie back at the house.
  • Best easy dinner: MACS on Broadway, where everything comes in a skillet of mac and cheese.

Toddlers and preschoolers (under 5)

Little kids don't need the biggest slides. They need shallow water, short lines and a nap.

  • Kalahari's Tiko's Watering Hole, a toddler area of about 5,000 square feet with small slides and a mini lazy river.
  • Great Wolf Lodge, smaller and easier to manage, with a big play structure.
  • Land of Natura (summer) added a splash pad for little ones in 2026, and the sandy beach on a natural, chlorine-free lake is a nice break from pool chemicals.
  • The Lower Dells boat tour is about an hour with no stops, easier than the two-hour Upper Dells tour.
  • The River Walk downtown, a flat, paved quarter-mile for a stroller.

Kalahari's kids areas work well for the youngest swimmers.

Kids under 48 inches have to wear a life jacket at the big indoor parks, and the parks provide them.

Ages 5 to 9

This is the sweet spot for the Dells. Almost everything is fair game.

  • Lost Canyon. A 30-minute horse-drawn wagon ride through a narrow sandstone canyon. Our son loved it, and so did the grandparents. It runs March through November.
  • The Upper Dells boat tour, with walks through Witches Gulch and to Stand Rock. Two hours, with stairs at the stops.
  • Wizard Quest on Broadway, an indoor quest through a fantasy maze. Best from about age 8, and adults need tickets too.
  • Mini golf. Pirate's Cove has five 18-hole courses, and there are courses up and down the Parkway (mid-March through October).
  • Waterparks, indoor or out. This is the age where the wave pool and lazy river can fill a whole day.

Lost Canyon is short, easy and genuinely impressive.

Ages 10 and up

Older kids want speed and a little challenge.

  • Tom Foolery's Adventure Park at Kalahari: two-story go-karts, a ropes course and zipline, laser tag. Our son and his friend spent three happy hours there. Read our Tom Foolery's guide.
  • The FlowRider surf simulator at Kalahari, and the new Aquadome slides that opened in October 2026.
  • Noah's Ark (summer) for the big outdoor thrill slides.
  • Asgard Axe & Tap downtown, where axe throwing starts at age 10.
  • Devil's Lake. The East Bluff hike to Devil's Doorway is rocky and steep in places, a real adventure for a kid who likes climbing.
  • Aquavia Lumina, a night walk through a canyon with lights and music at Wilderness, about 45 to 60 minutes on a gravel trail with some steep sections. Read our review.

Food kids actually eat

  • MACS (Macaroni and Cheese Shop), 208 Broadway or near Kalahari. Mac and cheese skillets with lots of combinations. An easy win.
  • Monk's Bar & Grill on Broadway for burgers. The kids menu famously comes on a Frisbee.
  • Stuff's for a big breakfast before a park day.
  • MarAzul on Broadway when the grown-ups want a real sit-down dinner. Read our MarAzul review.

Traveling with food allergies? We do too. We've found it's best to call ahead, especially for waterpark food, and to keep easy meals back at the house as a backup.

Tips from our trips

  • Book waterpark day passes online, early. They're limited and sell out on weekends. Chula Vista doesn't sell day passes at all.
  • Go at opening. The first hour at any waterpark has the shortest lines.
  • Plan one big thing a day. A waterpark in the morning and a boat tour in the evening is plenty for most kids.
  • Pack layers. Even in summer, evening boat tours on the river get cool.
  • Check the season. Outdoor waterparks run roughly Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day; boat tours run April through October; Lost Canyon runs March through November.

Where to stay with kids

A waterpark resort means the park is downstairs, but rooms get tight with a family. A vacation home gives you bedrooms, a kitchen and somewhere to unwind. My two homes are set up for families: both have arcade game rooms and a fire pit, and the 6-guest home has a crib, high chair and travel crib. More in where to stay in Wisconsin Dells.
