Kalahari vs Wilderness vs Great Wolf vs Mt. Olympus: Which Dells Waterpark Fits Your Family?

The four big names in Wisconsin Dells waterparks are Kalahari, Wilderness, Great Wolf Lodge and Mt. Olympus, and they're more different than they look from the Parkway. One is built for little kids, one is a giant maze of parks, one is the biggest indoor park in the Midwest, and one comes with roller coasters.
We've spent days at Kalahari, Wilderness and Great Wolf with our son. We haven't been inside Mt. Olympus yet, so that part is based on the park's own information. Here's how they compare, and which one we'd pick for which kind of trip.
The short answer
- Toddlers and young kids: Great Wolf Lodge. It's smaller, warm and easy to manage with little ones.
- Big slides all year: Kalahari. The most thrill rides under one roof, plus the new Aquadome.
- Variety over a few days: Wilderness. Eight parks, indoor and outdoor, plus Aquavia Lumina at night.
- Waterslides and roller coasters in one place: Mt. Olympus. Water parks and theme parks together.
- Summer only, outdoors: none of these. Go to Noah's Ark or Land of Natura instead. See our waterpark guide.

Kalahari
Kalahari is the biggest indoor waterpark in the Midwest, and it got bigger in October 2026 with the Aquadome, a 75,000-square-foot addition under a retractable roof with a boomerang raft ride, a water coaster, a racer, a big zero-depth pool and The Grotto, a 21+ swim-up bar. The original park has the FlowRider surf simulator, the Master Blaster uphill water coaster and a wave pool.
We spent a full day there and came away impressed. It was warm inside the whole time, and the FlowRider line said a lot about how popular it is.
- Pick it if you want the most rides and the biggest slides, any time of year.
- Skip it if you have only toddlers and want a smaller, calmer park.
- Know before you go: day passes are limited and weekends sell out first. Towels aren't provided for day-pass guests.

Wilderness Resort

Wilderness bills itself as America's largest waterpark resort: four indoor parks and four outdoor parks spread across connected buildings, including one of the country's biggest indoor wave pools in the Wild WaterDome, which reopened after a renovation in October 2026. We stayed a few days in March, so only the indoor parks were open, and the variety was the best part.
- Pick it if you're staying several days and want something new each day, or you're coming in summer when the outdoor parks are open too.
- Skip it if you don't want to walk. The parks are spread out across the property.
- Know before you go: day passes are sold through the resort's Daily Adventures desk and are limited on peak dates. At night, don't miss Aquavia Lumina, the light walk through the canyon.

Great Wolf Lodge

Great Wolf in the Dells is where the whole chain started. The indoor waterpark is smaller than Kalahari's and kept at 84 degrees, with a big water fort, a wave pool, a lazy river and plenty for kids who aren't tall enough for the big slides. That's exactly why we'd pick it for younger kids.
- Pick it if your kids are roughly toddler to grade-school age.
- Skip it if you have teens who want the biggest thrills.
- Know before you go: the lodge is big, and depending on your room it can be a long walk to the waterpark. Day passes include towels and life jackets, and half-day passes start in the afternoon.

Mt. Olympus

Mt. Olympus is four parks in one: indoor and outdoor water parks plus indoor and outdoor theme parks with wooden roller coasters and go-karts. In summer the outdoor park has the Rise of Icarus, a slide tower with a 145-foot drop. Hotel stays include park passes, and non-guests can buy a day ticket.
We haven't spent a day inside yet, so this is based on the park's own information. Guest reviews often mention dated rooms and crowds at peak times, along with praise for the rides.
- Pick it if your family wants roller coasters and go-karts as much as waterslides.
- Skip it if you want the newest, most polished indoor park.
- Know before you go: the biggest outdoor slides run in summer only, and some rides may cost extra.
See our Mt. Olympus guide.
Day passes or a resort stay?
All four sell day passes, so you don't have to stay at a waterpark resort to enjoy one. A vacation home with a day pass or two often works out well for families and groups: more space, a full kitchen, and a quieter place to come back to. Our two homes are 15 to 25 minutes from all four parks.
For every waterpark in the area, including the smaller ones and which ones are guests only, see our waterpark picks and the list of waterparks with day passes.
